In The Classroom: A positive spin

For deejay Arthur Galestian, being successful is more than reading how-to books and instructional guides.

Galestian fell in love with deejaying in the mid- to late ’90s.

“That’s kind of when I found out about deejaying as a means to put electronic music out there in an environment where people could appreciate it,” said Galestian, 28, who started deejaying at 19.

Galestian was the instructor at an all-day intensive deejaying seminar and workshop Sunday in an intimate setting at the Hollywood Production Center in Glendale. The seminar was presented by Five-Star Music store and school in Glendale.

“I think one thing that makes deejaying unique is that your work and play are mixed together,” Galestian said. “One thing that is going to separate a successful deejay is knowing when to separate those two.”

The seminar offered lessons in various aspects of deejaying, from equipment and techniques to marketing and self-promotion. An introduction to standard club gear, understanding the basic structure of dance music and creating an image were also covered.

“There’s an entire world in deejaying, from learning the craft itself to navigating the world of deejaying,” he said. “Deejays are really looked at as rock stars nowadays. There’s a lot that goes behind making that happen, beyond the deejaying.”

With two turntables, a mixer and powered speakers, Galestian began the course by showing how to create seamless mixing between tracks by adjusting the tempo so that the end of the first track matches the speed of the second track about to be played. Galestian went over the various technologies available, including state-of-the-art mixers and computer software.

“There is so much evolution with the technology that we are creating right now, that we’re taking it to another level,” said student Bill Blanco, 29, of West Covina. “I think that it’s a good opportunity to get involved, especially with the equipment, the technology and the knowledge to actually take it to a next level.”

Student deejay Loris Gharibian, 17, of Glendale, ended up selling some of his deejay equipment a few years ago after having no idea how to use it, adding with a laugh that he sold it “for cheap.”

He doesn’t regret the decision, he said, because he wants to be comfortable with the equipment he is using at gigs.

“[Music] is a way to express your feelings,” Gharibian said. “Music itself meditates you. It’s like a type of psychology.”

After 6 1/2 Years, Goodbye KUCI!

Dear KUCI staffers, lovers, fans, and supporters,

Tonight will mark the final broadcast of the show on KUCI 88.9FM.

After six-and-a-half years of running the show, the time has come for me to move on from my beloved Thursday night spot. When I jumped on board as a DJ at KUCI back in 2003, I was a starry-eyed fanatic of music who wanted to share his innermost passions with others who shared the same love for electronic dance music as I did.

Over the years, the show grew immensely. I can still listen to some of my old mixtapes from way back when and have a big “wow” moment at how far things have come. Fast forward to 2010, and “Division of Hardcore Samples” has become one of the most well-known radio shows in club land with some of the world’s best DJs and producers having been guests on the show. Famed trance vocalist Jes (“As The Rush Comes” with Motorcycle), British super-producers Above & Beyond, UK DJ/Producer Lange, and the legendary Swedish Egil of KROQ and Groove Radio, have all been guests on the show at KUCI — something which I am eternally grateful for. One of the biggest moments for DHS happened back in 2006, when we set up live remotes at Tentation Ultra Lounge to broadcast international Top 100 DJs like Armin van Buuren, Miss Nine, Matthew Dekay, Paolo Mojo, and Marco Bailey.

Today I’m blessed with the opportunity to be working in commercial radio alongside public radio, DJing, producing music, and also teaching it all to those who are eager to learn. I’m realizing my dream of making a living through music — which was my goal for the longest time — and it all began at KUCI.

I’m very thankful for having worked with all of the amazing people at KUCI over the years. Thank you SO much Mike Kaspar for your support when I most needed it while transitioning to commercial radio. Rita, you’ve been the most awesome co-worker, it’s truly been a pleasure having you as my show neighbor all this time — I especially love how you’re able to transition from indie to electronic music with your music selection so listeners don’t drop out! Sara, you’re one of the coolest people I know and I’m really glad we became friends at the station (thanks for covering the nights when I just couldn’t make it down!). Mike Boyle, you are one bad-ass engineer! What would I do without you when things were unexpectedly going wrong with guests at the studio — only you could come to the rescue! Kevin Stockdale, for keeping the backbone of KUCI going strong, and for all of your hard work and faith in the station. Nathan Callahan for being the quickest webmaster I’ve come to know. Dennis Simms for your dedication to your Friday night show and for exposing electronic music to OC for as long as I can remember. And of course, Morena, Genna, Liubys, Ramy, Genie, Jack Bartlett, Shapan, Steve Sherlock, Beth, … – it’s been great working with all of you (Genna & Morena, I’m sure I’ll be seeing you guys in clubland!). I apologize if I’ve left any names out, but know that I’m nothing but grateful for having met you.

Let’s not forget all of the local talents and guest DJs who have appeared and performed on the show — thank you all!

While I won’t be down in OC on Thursday nights anymore, I’ll be with KUCI indefinitely with spirit.

KUCI… thanks again for all of the opportunity you’ve provided for me, for giving me the vision to take the show to all of its heights, and for allowing me to grow with you. I love you!!

Lots of things are in store and there’s plenty more to come. Stay close and become a part of all the good things coming your way soon ;)

All the best,

Arthur Galestian

Above & Beyond Perform at Unveiling of Virgin Galactic’s Spaceship Launch!

A monumental moment in history since man first set foot on the moon!
Want to fly to space? Well now, you can — for $200,000. Virgin Galactic is the world’s first consumer space travel operator! And what’s more? They chose British trance producers Above & Beyond to celebrate the unveiling of the world’s first commercial passenger spacecraft with their anthemic club track “Buzz”. Listen to it and you’ll hear samples from the dialogue of Buzz Aldrin’s lunar landing in 1969.
The event took place in the Mojave Desert yesterday — December 7, 2009. After the unveiling, the group played an exclusive DJ set in front of an audience of 800 dignitaries, celebrities, future astronauts, and global media members. Governor Schwarzenegger was also at the event!
Above & Beyond’s Jono Grant said “We’re big fans of all things space-related and so in terms of dream gigs, this up there alongside our performance in Rio to one million people. We’re now hoping to persuade Richard to let us DJ on the first Virgin Galactic passenger flight into space.”
Clubbing on the moon? Dancing under the stars? I say… good luck team – hope you make it up there!
Here is an article from the LA Times with more detail on the event itself.

COMMUNITY: Black Eyed Peas Rip Off Adam Freeland… and Admit It!

This summer, UK DJ/Producer Adam Freeland blatantly accused the Black Eyed Peas of ripping of his track “Mancry” and using it for their own “Party All The Time”. Well, the Pea’s Will.I.Am has forked over the cash to Adam!

Check out this YouTube video comparing the two samples. Ambiguous? Right… it’s painfully obvious.
