Lightning in a Bottle 2013: New Location, New Dates Announced

LakePano: Lightning in a Bottle 2013: New Location, New Dates Announced

Annual music and arts festival Lightning in a Bottle is relocating to Riverside County this summer, West Coast Sound can exclusively report. In a vote yesterday, the Riverside County board of supervisors approved the application to hold Lightning in a Bottle 2013 at Lake Skinner County Park. The four day festival, which has taken place at Orange County’s Oak Canyon Park since 2009, was forced to find a new home due to zoning changes at that location.

Dede Flemming, co-founder of the DoLab, the production company behind Lightning in a Bottle, said the group was notified in September that Oak Canyon would no longer be able to host the event. The land that borders the park was recently donated to the Irvine Ranch Conservancy. Because the park, and specifically the onsite Irvine Lake, now border Conservancy-owned land, all large-scale music festivals there have been forced out.

“It wasn’t that Lightning in a Bottle was asked to leave,” Flemming says. “It was that all music events down there are coming to a halt.”

After a period of being “upset and a little freaked out,” DoLab organizers began searching for a new home. They subsequently discovered Lake Skinner, located in the Riverside county town of Winchester, near Temecula and 90 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

“Our relationship with the managers of [Oak Canyon Park] is still really strong,” Flemming says. “[The owner of that space] helped us find the new location.” The Orange County Sheriff”s Office and Fire Department provided letters of support for the DoLab’s four month campaign to secure the spot. “There’s no bad blood between anyone; we just had to move on.”

Previously held on Memorial Day weekend, the festival will have new dates because of the move.

Skinner Land: Lightning in a Bottle 2013: New Location, New Dates Announced

Lightning in a Bottle 2013 will take place July 11-15. A 48 hour ticket presale begins at 10am on Tuesday, February 12 at the event’s website.

Lake Skinner, which also hosts the annual Temecula Balloon & Wine Festival, offers the same camping opportunities as Oak Canyon Park, with more facilities, flat area, trees and grass than the previous location. The new space is almost entirely on a peninsula and provides the same privacy and natural setting as Oak Canyon. “Normally with a change like this there’s a lot of compromise and the sacrifice of some of our standards,” Flemming says. “We don’t feel like that’s happening at all. It’s really going to be a more comfortable experience all around.

Lake Skinner also offers increased capacity; the Board approved attendance of 15,000 for this year’s festival. “We’ve always had an eye out for a next venue because we hit capacity at Oak Canyon,” Flemming says. “We were planning on doing a couple more years there, but because that situation changed we were able to find a newer, better place sooner than we thought we had to. We’re excited to hopefully make Lake Skinner a long term home for Lightning in a Bottle.”

The DoLab will now move forward with booking artists and workshops for the yoga, sustainability, art, and electronic music-focused event. “This is a pretty exciting day,” Flemming said shortly after hearing the Board’s decision. “We were afraid to start creating the festival before we got approval, and even though we’re sad to leave a very welcoming Oak Canyon Park, we’re thrilled and excited to have this new home.”

⚓ Captain’s Log ⚓

The musical flow of this lineup will take listeners and dancers on a mind-bending psychedelic journey through the fabric of space and time, providing an unparalleled sense of inner clarity, peace, and serenity as they are lifted up from the physical plane of reality into beautiful, non-corporeal dimensions of existence.  We encourage early arrival at this gathering in order to enjoy the full experience this gathering has to offer.  Furthermore, each member of the gathering has a unique cosmic energy to share with the rest of us, thus increasing our harmony, and raising our energetic potential.  It is our goal to extend the length of this state of maximum potential energy to encompass the entirety of the gathering, providing gatherers with an abundance of love and positive energy all throughout the experience.

To begin the musical journey, the music will start with the sounds of AMBIENT, MID-TEMPO, and DARK ELECTRONICA.  As the energy is gradually lifted upward, we will move into the sounds of TECHNO and PROGRESSIVE HOUSE.  The vibe will groove right along adding nuances of PROGRESSIVE TECHNO, HOUSE, TRANCE, and more all fused together into an upbeat blend of modern PROGRESSIVE music.  Next the sounds will take a turn for more PSYCHEDELIC VIBES, all with a PROGRESSIVE groove.  The sounds will become MINIMAL, although growing faster into the harder sounds of PROGRESSIVE and NIGHT PSYCHEDELIC TRANCE.  The energy, now approaching critical with throbbing rolling basslines and the harder edged sound of NIGHT PSYCHEDELIC TRANCE will have the gathering in full spin.  By this time we have reached the peak hours of the night, and the vibes of a looming morning sunrise will begin to take hold.  The energy will shift towards deep, funky, TWILIGHT and early/deep MORNING PSYCHEDELIC TRANCE.  It is around this hour, before and through the sunrise that most of our live acts will play their sets.  Subtle MELODIES will begin to take form amongst the abstract textures of PSYCHEDELIC TRANCE.  As the sun rises, dancers will be UPLIFTED with deep emotional, yet intelligent MELODIC MORNING PSYTRANCE, moving into more FULL-ON MORNING vibes as the morning draws later.  As the sun reaches position above gatherers in the sky, the music will shift back towards harder PSYCHEDELIC FULL-ON bringing us into the afternoon hours.  The energy will become refocused and transformed from trance into PSYCHEDELIC BREAKBEAT to smooth out the mind before the end of the musical journey.  Finally the music will shift into some MELODIC TECHNO and PROGRESSIVE to finish out the journey.  As we reach the end of the gathering, dancers will be physically tired, though emotionally and spiritually empowered.  With renewed lightness in our steps we can return to the world, until the next cosmic excursion…

(Pre-donations will help us A LOT!!!  If you can afford to pay your donation early, it will make things much easier on the day of the event!  You may make pre-donations up through the WEDNESDAY before the event!)

✯ ★ Adults Only ★ ✯

(Donations go directly towards paying the costs of the gathering including: sound/audio equipment, DJs/artists, venue costs, decor, lighting, artwork, gas, travel expenses, etc..  In addition, a portion of each donation will go towards the local volunteer fire department, to support the land we are enjoying!  We will be accepting further donations on site for anybody who is able and willing.  Most of all, everybody involved with this gathering is doing this because we love the music, the people, and the beautiful creativity of the scene.  We have no sponsors, and all costs are coming out of our own pockets.  In addition, a great many volunteers are devoting their time, which has value beyond money.  We will be very happy and consider ourselves very lucky if we can just cover the costs of the gathering itself.  If there are any profits after that, they will be put towards more community based endeavors.)

✽☼ Environmental Containment ☼✽

This is a LEAVE NO TRACE gathering.  Please bring extra trash bags, and be extra sure to carry out ALL of the trash you bring.  Even better, if you see any other trash that somehow missed the trash bag, pick it up and throw it away; even if it’s not yours.  Not only will you be doing us and the land owners a favor, but you will also be doing nature a great service!  We will not have “public trash cans” on site, and instead encourage PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.  This PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY carries over to how you treat others, including their property at the gathering.  We are all one big harmonious family, and we owe it to ourselves to treat each other with the utmost mutual love, caring, and respect.  Most of our gatherers have attended such gatherings in the past, and understand this fully.  However, we do welcome new members of the family.  All we ask is that you take social cues, and follow these guidelines.

PULSAR is also happy to be serving as the official ambassador organization for…

July 28 – August 4th, 2012 – Located in Idanha-a-Nova, Portugal!

“Boom is based on the principles of Peace, Celebration, Psychedelic Culture, Art, Environment, Knowledge, Education, and Love. The idea is to create a space in this time continuum in which people from across the world can converge to experience an alternative reality – thus inspiring us to collectively channel the universal truth.

It is a festival dedicated to all free spirits. It is a celebration of intuition and telepathy where we witness a change in the way we communicate – eliminating the need for words.”

It is our belief that the views expressed in the mission statement of Boom Festival (as quoted above) are in line with the philosophy behind the Pulsar series of gatherings and events.  We happily represent them here in Southern California!

More info @

“A NEBULA (from Latin: “cloud”;[1] pl. nebulae or nebulو, with ligature or nebulas) is an interstellar cloud of dust, hydrogen gas, helium gas and other ionized gases. Originally, nebula was a general name for any extended astronomical object, including galaxies beyond the Milky Way (some examples of the older usage survive; for example, the Andromeda Galaxy was referred to as the Andromeda Nebula before galaxies were discovered by Edwin Hubble). Nebulae are often star-forming regions, such as in the Eagle Nebula. This nebula is depicted in one of NASA’s most famous images, the “Pillars of Creation”. In these regions the formations of gas, dust, and other materials “clump” together to form larger masses, which attract further matter, and eventually will become massive enough to form stars. The remaining materials are then believed to form planets, and other planetary system objects.” -Wikipedia

“A PULSAR (portmanteau of pulsating star) is a highly magnetized, rotating Neutron Star that emits a beam of Electromagnetic Radiation. This radiation can only be observed when the beam of emission is pointing towards the Earth, much the way a lighthouse can only be seen when the light is pointed in the direction of an observer, and is responsible for the pulsed appearance of emission. Neutron Stars are very Dense, and have short, regular rotational periods. This produces a very precise interval, between pulses that range from roughly milliseconds to seconds for an individual pulsar.

The precise periods of pulsars makes them useful tools. Observations of a pulsar in a binary neutron star system were used to confirm the existence of Gravitational Radiation. The first Extrasolar Planets were discovered around a pulsar, PSR B1257+12. Certain types of pulsars rival Atomic Clocks in their accuracy in keeping time.” – Wikipedia
