“Randall’s Island became a multiplex of temporary dance floors, with a stadium-scale stage for headliners and three tents with club-quality surround-sound systems.” —Jon Pareles, The New York Times

“Capping off a summer that saw the biggest electronic music events in U.S. history, Electric Zoo marked its third and biggest year yet.”  —Billboard.com

“The fest that began as a modest weekend event was something more, drawing crowds that were large even by music festival standards.” —The Wall Street Journal

“The three-day dance party on Randall’s Island had no shortage of new: New acts, new tracks and new grass (really!) filled the 24-acre island for 12 hours a day over Labor Day weekend… Despite the record number of attendees — over 85,000 fans showed up — Electric Zoo didn’t lose its sense of ease and comfort. Thanks to an increased number of restrooms, a variety of food vendors and the use of RFID wristband technology, which minimized entrance time, there were no lines to be found. And when you wanted to dance deep inside the tent, there was an actual dance floor and ample space to do so. When you’re talking about music marathons, these are small details that many festival producers overlook, the small details that can turn a great event into an exceptional one. ” —Huffington Post

“While it certainly is a spectacle, Electric Zoo was probably the happiest place on earth last weekend.” —Village Voice

“Electric Zoo [2011] was sick!  The crowd was unbelievable and brought an incredible energy to the city.” —Tiësto

“I felt like playing Electric Zoo [2011] advanced me as an artist.” —Porter Robinson

CIELO CELEBRATES ITS 9TH ANNIVERSARY!
Panorama Bar’s CASSY performs on Saturday, January 28, 2012
Cassy, resident DJ at house music mecca Panorama Bar
Cielo celebrates 9 great years in NYC’s chic Meatpacking District. Over the years, the club has defined itself as a global dance music brand with a successful compilation series, dedication to quality music programming and superior Funktion One sound in an intimate club setting. The 9th anniversary party will feature Cassy, resident DJ at house music mecca Panorama Bar, along with Cielo residents Nicolas Matar and Willie Graff on Saturday, January 28th.

On the longevity and success of the club, co-owner and resident DJ Nicolas Matar says, “Cielo has been a labor of love from the very beginning for all those involved. Everything we do is for the love of dance music – from the sound, hospitality, lighting, and quality of music, all are designed to provide a superior night of clubbing.”

When first opened Cielo was a neighborhood pioneer in the Meatpacking District, establishing roots in an area best known for meat warehouses and transvestites.  Since then the area has developed into a hub of designer hotels, fashion boutiques and high-end restaurants. To this day, the club has never strayed from its vision of being a music-driven dance venue and over the years established itself as one of the top clubs in the world. The venue’s one-room design and sunken dancefloor provides an intimate connection between the DJ and clubber that is unparalleled. The club  serves as host for two of the longest running weekly parties in the U.S. The legendary Body & Soul doyen Francois K helms Deep Space Mondays and house music legends  Louie Vega & Kevin Hedge host Roots Wednesdays. Over the last year, the club has also seen its share of global superstar DJs including, James Zabiela, Chris Liebing, Ben Watt, Roger Sanchez, Mark Knight & Nick Warren. Nine years from its inception, Cielo still strives for excellence, never straying from its original vision and constantly delivering as an international clubbing destination for both DJs and clubbers.

Let’s clear the air: Dust reduction efforts for 2011
When Electric Zoo opened up last year, on Saturday September 4 at 11am, the Randall’s Island Park lawn was lush, long, and seemingly healthy. But the dancing and frolicking of 25,000 pairs of feet coupled with the unusually dry summer took a toll, and by the end of the day, the grass had been trampled and a lot of dirt had been kicked up into the air. When the wind gusted – especially around the Sunday School Grove, but in other parts of the festival grounds too – the dust was downright obnoxious. Many of you, understandably, have expressed concerns about this. We hear you, and we’ve been working on measures to address this problem in 2011. We’re serious about doing everything we can to minimize the dust, so we can ALL breathe easy and focus on what we love – the music!
Here’s a list of things we’ve put in place to reduce the dust:
  • Flooring will be used in all of the tents. This means that where all that dancing is going on, the grass will be protected and dirt won’t be kicked up.
  • Dirt service roads will be covered with flooring. As our crew travels in golf carts and other vehicles to get from place to place around the perimeter of the festival grounds, there’ll be far less dirt stirred up.
  • Making use of existing pavement for high traffic areas, including the area directly in front of the main stage. The main stage will be moved back this year in order to create more space. This will mean that a large area directly in front of the main stage will now be situated on pavement rather than grass. So when you “tear up the dancefloor” in front of the main stage, you’ll no longer be tearing up grass and kicking up dirt at the same time
We’ve also hired lawn specialists to consult with and work with our friends at Randall’s Island Park to improve on the maintenance of the field and to get it as healthy as possible before Electric Zoo. At their recommendation, we have also taken these measures:
  • Installed additional irrigation in early Spring
  • Lawn aeration
  • Reseeding, fertilizing and adding gypsum
Stay tuned for more lineup announcements!
