Markus Schulz Voted America's Best DJ; Award Ceremony & Closing Party at Marquee Nightclub on October 7

The votes have all been counted and it’s official — DJ Times magazine and Pioneer DJ are proud to announce that Markus Schulz has been voted ‘America’s Best DJ’ for 2012. The talented Miami-based DJ will be honored October 7 in Las Vegas for the ABDJ Closing Party, which will include a press reception, at Marquee Nightclub at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. After being presented with his trophy–a special Gold-Plated Pioneer mixer—Markus will take to the decks along with special guest A-Trak to cap the wildest Columbus Day Weekend Vegas has ever seen. Even better – the party is free!

“I’ve just found out the amazing news that I’ve been voted America’s Best DJ—it’s a huge honor and I want to thank everyone for their support,” said Markus Schulz from the road, as he continued his tour in support of “Scream,” his latest artist album on Armada Music. “It is has been an extraordinary time for dance music in the United States over the last couple of years. I’d also like to thank the promoters and all the industry people that have worked so hard throughout the years to help DJ culture come of age. Our scene has been built from a foundation of respect and admiration for the music. When I’m on stage doing what I love every week, winning awards is the last thing on my mind. So to win this really means an incredible amount to me, and I am humbled by everyone out there who believes in what I do. I’d like to thank DJ Times, its readership and my hugely loyal fans for their incredible degree of support in this. I’m very proud to represent the booming scene in the US.”

While most of the votes were cast online at the America’s Best DJ website, the America’s Best DJ Summer Tour Presented by Pioneer DJ & DJ Times supported the contest by allowing fans to vote in-person at 20+ club and festival events.

“As always, Pioneer congratulates all the DJs nominated for America’s Best DJ, and we would like to offer special congratulations to Markus Schulz, this year’s winner,” said David “Davey Dave” Arevalo, Sr. Manager – Marketing/Artist Relations for Pioneer Electronics (USA). “Markus has been a leading DJ/producer for two decades now and he’s cultivated a loyal and lasting fanbase. By creating exciting music and maintaining one of the game’s busiest touring schedules, which includes top festivals and club venues, he has helped spread DJ culture around the globe. For all of these accomplishments, he richly deserves this award.”

“I’m very happy to see Markus win America’s Best DJ,” said Sol Shafer, Director of Special Operations & Music, TAO Group, which oversees Marquee Nightclub & Dayclub. “For almost the past decade, I have seen him make people smile and dance—and this is an achievement that is well deserved.”

Over Labor Day weekend, Made Event presented Electric Zoo 2012, and once again transformed New York City’s Randall’s Island into a multiplex of music, lights and dancing, along with 100+ of the world’s best and brightest electronic music artists. The 3-day bonanza hosted 110,000 avid fans with sold-out capacity crowds on Saturday & Sunday.

Bigger than ever in its fourth year, Electric Zoo’s technological advances helped transform the festival landscape. Intellitix’s RFID technology was again embedded in wristbands to help festival-goers enter quickly through the front gates. The stadium-scale Main Stage featured high-resolution motion-controlled video panels that created a massive sense of scale, which could be reconfigured live to create unique looks for each individual artist. The Riverside Stage included custom-designed 3D LED technology used for the first time ever at a live electronic music show. Meanwhile, the Hilltop Arena saw a wall of LED panels and mirrors set at specific angles, working in tandem to bathe the tent in a sea of lights and lasers. And over at the Sunday School Grove, original custom-designed school buses integrated LEDs with 3D projection mapping to create an immersive mixed-media experience. In every tent, club-quality sound systems enveloped fans with impeccable sound engineered by Integral Sound.

Electric Zoo 2012 also saw the return of NYC’s finest food vendors & trucks, which offered everything from hand-tossed gourmet pizza, and Korean BBQ to organic ice cream. Also returning was the Garden of EZ, a chill-out zone featuring mind-altering art and lights, full of a thousand neon butterflies from artist Gizem Bacaz and giant mushrooms from artist Dan Park.

But most important of all, Made Event committed to creating a fun and safe environment for its fans; free water refill stations, designated Help Points and the simple idea – Many Animals, One Zoo: Help Each Other Be Safe! With positive vibes all around, Electric Zoo 2012 was all about connecting music and friends old and new. Thank you Zoo animals. See you at Electric Zoo 2013 for the five-year anniversary!

Electric Zoo might not be the country’s largest, splashiest, or most hyped electronic dance music festival. But we’re going to go on record and say that it’s the best.” — Billboard

The only way to truly understand Electric Zoo and the dance music culture itself is to experience it – to put yourself dead center, amid the furry boots and driving bass lines. EDM is something you need to feel, not only hear, if you ever wish to truly understand it.” — RollingStone.com

For the fourth year in a row, Electric Zoo has redecorated New York City‘s Randall’s Island in its own sparkly neon image, transforming the East River outpost from public park to a floating big-name rave boat.” — SPIN.com

“As far as parties go, Electric Zoo is a marathon: In its fourth year, the Labor Day weekend dance music festival has grown to a three-day, four-stage, 100-plus-DJ, 100,000- fan extravaganza sprawled across Randall’s Island.” — The Wall Street Journal

“Electric Zoo reveled in the high-tech and the synthetic. The D.J.’s were small, peppy figures surrounded by dizzying, strobing video displays, the humans piloting the cybernetic colossus. What once was a club experience has proved to be, in geek terms, perfectly scalable to festival size; seeing the performer onstage is the least of anyone’s concerns when the music, the lights and everybody dancing are the real show. It’s a fully participatory man-made world, not just in staging but in the party gear worn by most people in the audience: fluorescent tutus and legwarmers, L.E.D.-equipped shirts and shoes, technicolor wigs and glitter adhering everywhere. Dancing skin becomes its own artificial display.” — The New York Times

“[Electric Zoo] was amazing! One of my favorite shows of the year. The festival premiered new 3D technology during my set, which made it really unique. It’s great that New York has Electric Zoo; the fans need this and the location on Randall’s Island is really special.”  —A-TRAK

It’s a real pleasure to perform to such a big yet discerning audience in one of the greatest cities in the world.”  —ABOVE & BEYOND

“Electric Zoo had to be one of the most magical places I have ever played in my entire life; the vibe of the crowd was so amazing. The fact that the festival is in New York is pretty amazing. Who doesn’t absolutely love New York? NY has definitely shown me that it is my second home, I wouldn’t be opposed to moving there…”  –DILLON FRANCIS

“[Electric Zoo] is a great experience and a great step for fans of dance music. So much diversity and progression in the bookings and the vibes. This was my 3rd and this was the best year. NYC is the inspiration. NYC is the king.” –DIPLO

“Electric Zoo was definitely one of a kind.  Besides the amazing lineup they brought this year, the entire event was just so well produced. New York is such an important market for EDM and being right in the heart of New York, surrounded by water and seeing the beautiful landscape of Manhattan is unlike anything else.”   – DJ BL3ND

“It’s great to be part of something that is so anticipated like Electric Zoo. We always get some new fans from playing at this show because a lot of people trust Electric Zoo and who they choose to play their festival. There’s so much attention to details at this festival. We appreciate that the focus is 100% on the music and the fan experience.” –GABRIEL & DRESDEN

“It’s crazy to have a festival of this caliber in such proximity to New York City. Electric Zoo definitely creates a certain vibe that I haven’t really experienced anywhere else.”  –KILL THE NOISE

“[Electric Zoo] was fantastic; the crowd is wild, cheerful and knows its music so I could play an ambitious 180° across the board set. My favorite! I consider New York as my home in the US. During my set I had the feeling I was adopted for good. That felt amazing.”  –MARTIN SOLVEIG

“The atmosphere was amazing and I loved every minute of the crowd’s energy. The people who come to Electric Zoo are just so passionate about the music and they really show it with their energy and enthusiasm. It really is so special. New York is one of my favourite cities around the world and I’m planning on living there in 2013 so it is my new home!”  –TIËSTO

With his diverse four-track ‘The Bipolar EP‘  priming itself for release, Anjunabeats rising star Mat Zo is embarking on his biggest tour of North America yet – including dates at San Francisco’s Ruby Skye, Toronto’s Guvernment, Denver’s Beta and Chicago’s Sound Bar. The 10-date tour will come to an end at Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy Miami party on Bayfront Park, site of the Ultra Music Festival, on Thursday, March 22 alongside Above & Beyond, Arty, Boom Jinx and Jaytech [#GroupTherapyMiami].

With Skrillex, Axwell, Radio 1 and MTV Dance all supporting his recent anthem “Mozart” (with Arty), the fast rising Mat Zo returns with an eclectic four-track blast of his innovative talents – each track a distinct dancefloor juggernaut in its own right.

With recent eclectic sets at events like the Bugged Out! Weekender and his drum & bass material as MRZO and MRSA for Hospital Records supported by the likes of Camo & Crooked, Zo is fast asserting himself as unique electronic talent; something ‘The Bipolar EP’ reinforces further by blending influences as varied as Daft Punk, Diplo, Deadmau5 and even classic US house and twisting them into bold big room sounds.

Surging the raw funk of Daft Punk at their punkiest against the deeply musical strains that Zo is renowned for, the lead track “Bipolar” lives up to its name by flitting between clicky grooves, electro synth stabs and subtle melodic waves in devastating dancefloor fashion.

A homage to Mat’s love of classic dance across the 90s and early noughties, “It’s Yours” is as inventive take on Jon Cutler & E-Man’s funky house classic “It’s Yours”. Already a big room anthem from Mat’s recent sets at Bugged Out! Weekender and TATW400 in Beirut, “It’s Yours” builds waves of infectious melodic funk into a climatic drop.

A bridge between the carnival sounds of acts like Diplo and Major Lazer and the stadium filling trance world, “Ring On It” is an experimental bleep and bass-heavy explosion of carnival vibes – built around a subtle but undeniably epic riff.

Named after the world famous cellist, closing track “Yoyo Ma” is a driving melodic tech odyssey that draws influences from Eric Prydz’s most epic Pryda work, big room techno and the classier end of trance.

Celebrating the ‘The Bipolar EP,’ Mat has also released an hour long mix of progressive grooves, quirky mash-ups and the innovative tracks from EP itself.

Electric Zoo Payment Plans, Dust Reduction Efforts

Electric Zoo 2011: Party People
Payment Plans let you pay for your passes in installments
LAST DATE TO ORDER VIA LAYAWAY IS JULY 1

You know you want to go to Electric Zoo but you don’t have all the money for a pass available right now. If only you could pay a little now and a little later, right? Well we’ve got good news for you!

New in 2011, Electric Zoo fans have the option to purchase their pass on a payment plan. Layaway options are available when ordering online or by calling 888-512-SHOW (7469). There are 2 different Payment Plan options:
  • 50% Down: This plan allows you to pay 50% of your order total plus service fees now, with the remaining 50% automatically deducted from your card on August 1, 2011.
  • 30% Down + Equal Payments: This plan allows you to pay 30% of your order total plus service fees now, with the remaining balance automatically deducted in equal payments on July 1st and August 1st, 2011.
Let’s clear the air: Dust reduction efforts for 2011
When Electric Zoo opened up last year, on Saturday September 4 at 11am, the Randall’s Island Park lawn was lush, long, and seemingly healthy. But the dancing and frolicking of 25,000 pairs of feet coupled with the unusually dry summer took a toll, and by the end of the day, the grass had been trampled and a lot of dirt had been kicked up into the air. When the wind gusted – especially around the Sunday School Grove, but in other parts of the festival grounds too – the dust was downright obnoxious. Many of you, understandably, have expressed concerns about this. We hear you, and we’ve been working on measures to address this problem in 2011. We’re serious about doing everything we can to minimize the dust, so we can ALL breathe easy and focus on what we love – the music!
Here’s a list of things we’ve put in place to reduce the dust:
  • Flooring will be used in all of the tents. This means that where all that dancing is going on, the grass will be protected and dirt won’t be kicked up.
  • Dirt service roads will be covered with flooring. As our crew travels in golf carts and other vehicles to get from place to place around the perimeter of the festival grounds, there’ll be far less dirt stirred up.
  • Making use of existing pavement for high traffic areas, including the area directly in front of the main stage. The main stage will be moved back this year in order to create more space. This will mean that a large area directly in front of the main stage will now be situated on pavement rather than grass. So when you “tear up the dancefloor” in front of the main stage, you’ll no longer be tearing up grass and kicking up dirt at the same time
We’ve also hired lawn specialists to consult with and work with our friends at Randall’s Island Park to improve on the maintenance of the field and to get it as healthy as possible before Electric Zoo. At their recommendation, we have also taken these measures:
  • Installed additional irrigation in early Spring
  • Lawn aeration
  • Reseeding, fertilizing and adding gypsum
Stay tuned for more lineup announcements!
