“Randall’s Island became a multiplex of temporary dance floors, with a stadium-scale stage for headliners and three tents with club-quality surround-sound systems.” —Jon Pareles, The New York Times

“Capping off a summer that saw the biggest electronic music events in U.S. history, Electric Zoo marked its third and biggest year yet.”  —Billboard.com

“The fest that began as a modest weekend event was something more, drawing crowds that were large even by music festival standards.” —The Wall Street Journal

“The three-day dance party on Randall’s Island had no shortage of new: New acts, new tracks and new grass (really!) filled the 24-acre island for 12 hours a day over Labor Day weekend… Despite the record number of attendees — over 85,000 fans showed up — Electric Zoo didn’t lose its sense of ease and comfort. Thanks to an increased number of restrooms, a variety of food vendors and the use of RFID wristband technology, which minimized entrance time, there were no lines to be found. And when you wanted to dance deep inside the tent, there was an actual dance floor and ample space to do so. When you’re talking about music marathons, these are small details that many festival producers overlook, the small details that can turn a great event into an exceptional one. ” —Huffington Post

“While it certainly is a spectacle, Electric Zoo was probably the happiest place on earth last weekend.” —Village Voice

“Electric Zoo [2011] was sick!  The crowd was unbelievable and brought an incredible energy to the city.” —Tiësto

“I felt like playing Electric Zoo [2011] advanced me as an artist.” —Porter Robinson

Arty was just named an ‘EDM Rookie to Watch in 2012′ by MTV, and his big room house anthems such as “Around The World,” “Kate” and “Mozart” (with Mat Zo) have received support by Avicii, Swedish House Mafia, Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Above & Beyond and Skrillex. He has also has been targeted by many A-list producers including Axwell, Dirty South and Porter Robinson to collaborate on new productions. His new single “Trio” with Matisse & Sadko is due out shortly and his remix of Dirty South’s “Walking Alone” is already rocking dancefloors (listen on Soundcloud).

Cedric Gervais has reigned supreme over the Miami dance scene for years but still finds time to take his talents to the studio, with production credits that include working with Lenny Kravitz, Deep Dish and Steve Lawler, just to name a few. His first single with Ultra Records, “Burning,” was a great success on both the charts and the underground circuit, and his debut album, ‘The Experiment,’ featured the massive hit, “Spirit in My Life.” This month he releases a new single, Cedric Gervais & CID “Playa” on Ultra. He brings his new Sh!t Show residency to Marquee in March. Watch his 2012 tour trailer on YouTube.

Dash Berlin is known for anthems like “Till The Sky Falls Down,” “Man On The Run,” “Disarm Yourself,” “Waiting,” and “Better Half Of Me,” which is nominated for an IDMAin ‘Best Trance Track’ (listen on YouTube). 2011 saw this Top 10 DJ (in DJ Mag’s Top 100 poll) tour every corner of the world, playing the festival circuit and the legendary ASOT500 celebration with Armin van Buuren.

EDX has been making a name for himself in the international EDM scene over the past few years, playing the world’s finest clubs and biggest festivals and landing his own weekly ‘No Xcuses’ radio show on Sirius XM’s Electric Area (listen on Soundcloud). Having remixed/produced for the likes of Axwell, Benny Benassi, Kelis, Deadmau5, Armand Van Helden, Bob Sinclar, Kool & The Gang, Kaskade, Armin Van Buuren, Steve Angello, Dubfire and many others, EDX’s highly anticipated original artist album ‘On The Edge’ was released last month.

Ferry Corsten is one of the pioneers of the Dutch trance sound, propelling it into the clubbing consciousness and further into popular culture. He continues to innovate, remixing some of the world’s most enduring artists, including U2, The Killers, Moby and more. His fourth artist album, ‘WKND,’ is scheduled for release this month and includes “Brute,” a co-production with Armin van Buuren which ranked #1 for over 2 weeks in the trance charts on Beatport. Watch the original WKND videos, featuring behind the scenes footage, on YouTube.

Gareth Emery is one of the youngest DJs ever to crack to the top ten in DJ Mag’s Top 100 poll. His 2010 debut artist album ‘Northern Lights’ on his own label Garuda hit #1 on the US iTunes dance chart within hours of release. Emery launches himself into 2012 with his new single, “Concrete Angel,” which premiered on BBC Radio One andSirius XM and was named by Armin van Buuren as ‘Tune of the Week’ on his popular radio show ‘A State of Trance.’ Watch the official music video on YouTube.

Hardwell’s international breakthrough came in 2009 with his “Show Me Love vs. Be” bootleg of Steve Angello and Laidback Luke’s track and Robin S’ classic. Since then, he has gone on to collaborate with Tiësto on “Zero 76,” and release “Cobra” (which premiered on MTV) and his latest “Spaceman.”  Hardwell’s tunes can also be heard every week on his radio show “Hardwell On Air” on Sirius XM’s Electric Area. It’s no surprise that he landed at #24 in the DJ Mag Top 100 poll, and was recently nominated for an IDMA in the ‘Best Breakthough DJ’ category and also named an ‘EDM Rookie To Watch’ by MTV. Watch his 2011 Yearmix on YouTube.

Nicky Romero entered the global music scene with his first release, a remake of Groove Armada’s “My Friend.” He has gone on to earn three top ten consecutive listings on the Beatport Top 100 for overall downloads with “Camorra” (on Calvin Harris’ label Fly Eye), “Toulouse,” (on Spinnin’ Records) and most recently “Generation 303″ (on Tiesto’s label Musical Freedom). His remix of Kelly Clarkson’s “What Doesn’t Kill You makes you Stronger,” new single Jack Back ft David Guetta, Nicky Romero and Sia “Wild One Two,” both drop February 14, and his mix for Madonna’s track “Give Me All Your Luvin,” is soon to be released. Romero was voted ‘Best Remixer’ by Only for DJ’s magazine, as well as MTV naming him ‘EDM Rookie To Watch in 2012.’ He will be launching his own imprint  and new radio show on Slam FM, as well as on Sirius XM this year.  Check out his Soundcloud.

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano are an energetic Dutch twosome who match soulful vocals with deep and funky house and hints of South American percussion pervading tribal influences.  Axwell refers to them as the Dutch version of SHM and their tour diary is stacked with headlining appearances at festivals throughout the world. MTV tapped them for house DJ duties for their 2012 NYE live broadcast from Times Square and they are the current ‘Residents of the Month’ on SiriusXM. Massive releases like their remake of Tiesto’s “Lethal Industry,” along with their chart topping hits “Tribeca” and “Markuzza” have dominated dancefloors on every continent and have invoked universal support from EDM’s most respected stars.

Let’s clear the air: Dust reduction efforts for 2011
When Electric Zoo opened up last year, on Saturday September 4 at 11am, the Randall’s Island Park lawn was lush, long, and seemingly healthy. But the dancing and frolicking of 25,000 pairs of feet coupled with the unusually dry summer took a toll, and by the end of the day, the grass had been trampled and a lot of dirt had been kicked up into the air. When the wind gusted – especially around the Sunday School Grove, but in other parts of the festival grounds too – the dust was downright obnoxious. Many of you, understandably, have expressed concerns about this. We hear you, and we’ve been working on measures to address this problem in 2011. We’re serious about doing everything we can to minimize the dust, so we can ALL breathe easy and focus on what we love – the music!
Here’s a list of things we’ve put in place to reduce the dust:
  • Flooring will be used in all of the tents. This means that where all that dancing is going on, the grass will be protected and dirt won’t be kicked up.
  • Dirt service roads will be covered with flooring. As our crew travels in golf carts and other vehicles to get from place to place around the perimeter of the festival grounds, there’ll be far less dirt stirred up.
  • Making use of existing pavement for high traffic areas, including the area directly in front of the main stage. The main stage will be moved back this year in order to create more space. This will mean that a large area directly in front of the main stage will now be situated on pavement rather than grass. So when you “tear up the dancefloor” in front of the main stage, you’ll no longer be tearing up grass and kicking up dirt at the same time
We’ve also hired lawn specialists to consult with and work with our friends at Randall’s Island Park to improve on the maintenance of the field and to get it as healthy as possible before Electric Zoo. At their recommendation, we have also taken these measures:
  • Installed additional irrigation in early Spring
  • Lawn aeration
  • Reseeding, fertilizing and adding gypsum
Stay tuned for more lineup announcements!
